Summary

The Berkeley Highway Laboratory (BHL) Detector System has matured as a result of the previous two years of research and an initial Website (http:www.its.berkeley.edu/bhl/) has been developed that encompasses current and historical data, preliminary detector and system diagnostics, and other relevant features of the system.

The following three areas of further research have been identified as having the highest priority for future work in addition to operating and maintaining the BHL system, transferring data to District 04, archiving data, and distributing data to researchers.

• Comprehensive analysis of BHL detector data to further enhance and refine the developed detector diagnostics, to identify lane associated traffic measurement patterns for missing data substitution, and to undertake macroscopic data research.
• The Caltrans state-wide test beds including the BHL detector system are being consolidated into one site at the CCIT facilities. Based upon experience from previous BHL detector system research, a new BHL system will be designed, installed, and tested.
• There is a need for a portable stand-alone diagnostic tool that would perform most of the current developed detector diagnostics. Based upon experience from the previous BHL research, a design and specifications for a portable detector diagnostic tool will be developed

A research plan to accomplish this research has been developed and consists of the following seven tasks.

• Task 1 Conduct Comprehensive Traffic Detector Analysis
• Task 2 Further Evaluation and Refinement of Detector Diagnostics
• Task 3 Design, Install, and Test BHL Detector System at CCIT
• Task 4 Operate and Maintain BHL Detector System, Transfer Data to District 04, and Archive and Distribute Data
• Task 5 Develop a Design and Specifications for a Portable Detector Diagnostic Tool
• Task 6 Prepare Final Report
• Task 7 Advisory Meetings and Progress Reports
