Summary

The objective of this study is to develop operational procedures for displaying travel times on CMS. The project is composed of the following tasks: 1) identify the most promising corridors for CMS, 2) evaluate the current system capabilities for providing travel times, 3) develop an efficient means for obtaining feedback on CMS, and 4) develop procedures for state-wide deployment.

The provision of useful real-time information via CMS will reduce system-wide travel time and improve the reliability of displayed travel times. This reduces driver anxiety and uncertainty and improves safety of California's roadways.

The deliverables of this project include a set of guidelines that can be made readily available to the staff of Caltrans' districts, so they can provide more accurate travel times on their CMS.
