Summary

The practical application of design and review procedures for freeway weaving sections continues to produce inconsistent results. Leisch method, LOSD method, and HCM - each of these weave analysis tools vary on conditions. This project seeks to design weaving analysis procedure that is consistent while reconsidering and reevaluating previous models.

First, an evaluation of the existing tools will be conducted to determine under what conditions the best available tools are most effective. A literature search and work with Caltrans staff to produce guidelines for the application of these methodologies accompany the evaluation. Second, modifying existing approaches or creating a new approach will fashion an improved procedure. The discoveries from these modifications are going to be incorporated into Caltrans' highway design manual.
