Summary
A segment of California's traffic signal control systems are coordinated. Improvements in the efficiency (e.g. delay per vehicle) and robustness (e.g. variance of delay per vehicle) of these traffic control systems are possible and could improve the management of congestion.
The Parsons Traffic and Transit Laboratory at UC Berkeley has developed a cost-effective communication device to test in a real traffic situation. The laboratory will extend the idea of a robust timing approach to coordinated actuation control systems.
In addition, the team of TO 5325 developed a systematic approach to make a coordinated control system more adaptive. This has been tested using microscopic traffic simulation tools, but must be verified using field operational test. This will be combined with communication device in the previous description to improve traffic signal control systems.
